Saturday Night Genealogy Fun

Randy Seaver at Genea-Musings sets a topic every Saturday night.  Here's tonight's topic:



1)  Tell us about your "other" hobbies or interests outside of genealogy and family history research, writing, speaking, etc.  Be mindful of your family's privacy, though!





Although I am passionate about genealogy, I do have other interests.  I'm a fine art photographer, with a website here.  Here are a couple of examples of my work:




















I've also been studying watercolor painting for the past few years.  I love doing it, but watercolor is a devilishly difficult medium!  Here are a couple of my paintings --

Beyond this, I love to travel.  In the past several years, we've gone to the UK, to Italy, and to Paris.

Beyond this, as a retired English professor, I am still interested in research and writing.  Obviously, my blog presents an opportunity to write, and genealogy to research.  But I'm also working on a book on German genealogy research for beginners, which I hope to have published soon.

The Dream Genealogy Trip

Last night's Saturday Night Genealogy Fun got me started thinking about my dream genealogical trip to Germany.  I figured out the route: It's not that long -- 10.5 hour drive overall.  But of course I wouldn't be driving it in one day but rather stopping along the way to visit relatives, archives, and so on.  I think the flight to Bremerhaven would go through Charles De Gaulle in Paris because at this moment in life, I need to fly premium economy.  Then I'd rent a car and go the rest of the trip, then I guess go back to Bremerhaven if leaving the car at Frankfurt would be too expensive.  I'm thinking $6000 or so should about cover it (the premium economy is expensive!). When could I do this?  In 2015, we're going to a family reunion kind of thing in Minnesota, and if it's at all possible, I'd like to take my sister on a genealogy cruise to Alaska (serious fantasy -- don't know if it's workable).  Maybe in 2016 it would work, in the spring?  We...

Musings on a Career Just Ended

Not exactly a genealogy post, but family history of a kind, I guess, for future readers --  As of today, I am officially 100% retired.  For the past two years, I've been in a kind of limbo -- retired as far as the State of California was concerned, but still eligible to go back and teach two classes each spring, for five years.  Almost no one makes it to the five-year mark -- I only made two.  In the end, I think it was the commute (75 miles each way) that finally got me, that and not wanting to work so hard any more, and also that I wanted to go while I was still at the top of my game, and I could see that beginning to slip a little each year (forgetting students' names, not being able to find the right word any more, that kind of thing).  I didn't want to become that ancient relic that students roll their eyes at, an old fuddy-duddy completely out of touch with whatever got them excited about education. Here we go again --

Hello everyone -- it's been a while since I last posted, right before my knee replacement surgery.  I've been coming along fine, but recovery (along with my participation in Open Studios a couple of weeks ago) has taken quite a bit of my attention, and it's only now that I can begin to go back to much more interesting things, like genealogy.   I'm going to try to make it up to everyone by posting something every day of November, as part of BlogHer's "NaBloPoMo" challenge.  They're offering prizes!  How can I not try for an iPod Mini?  Let's see, where did we leave off?   Interesting Bremerhaven view, from amdolu  on flickr The Ortmann clan in Erkeln, Germany, is beginning to fill in, with the descendants of Stephan Hermann Ortmann, the brother of EDC's great-grandfather, Joseph Ortmann.  I won't go into details about them, in order to protect their privacy, but we do have quite a few relatives in that little town!  I'm hoping to hear b...
